Component marking in aeronautics: standards, norms and requirements explained in an understandable way

Dec 12, 2025 | News

Component marking in aeronautics places particularly high demands on safety, traceability and quality. In aeronautics and aircraft construction, the unique marking of components is essential, as aviation components are exposed to extreme stresses and have long life cycles.

As a supplier to the aerospace industry – as well as to related industries such as automotive – standard-compliant component marking in aeronautics is crucial. Only by complying with international marking standards can components be reliably integrated into production, maintenance and logistics processes.

Important standards for component marking in aeronautics

Röltgen supports companies in the aeronautics, aircraft construction and automotive industries in implementing internationally recognised standards for component marking in aeronautics, including:

  • US Department of Defence (DoD) – UID standards
  • Airline Industry (ATA, A4A) Spec 2000
  • AIM-DPM (Automatic Identification & Mobility Association)
  • SAE International AS9132
  • Rolls-Royce JES131 & RRES90003
  • ISO/IEC TR 29158

Aeronautics standards at a glance

SAE International AS9132 – Component marking in aeronautics with data matrix

The AS9132 standard, published by the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG), defines process requirements for 2D data matrix component marking in aeronautics on metallic components.

Among other things, it specifies:

  • Point size and point spacing
  • Maximum angular distortion
  • Contrast and legibility

The aim is to ensure reliable verification of all data matrix codes in modern aircraft construction.

Airline Industry Spec 2000 (ATA / A4A)

Spec 2000 was developed to standardise supply chains and digital processes in aeronautics. It is closely linked to aeronautical component marking, as it specifies unique identification and data standards.

It serves as a global standard for:

  • E-business processes
  • Spare parts management
  • Logistics and technical documentation

🔗 Further information on Spec 2000 can be found at Airlines for America (A4A).

Rolls-Royce JES131 & RRES90003 – Marking in aircraft construction

These Rolls-Royce-specific standards define precise requirements for component marking in aircraft construction, including:

  • Type of marking
  • Position of the marking
  • Permitted technologies (plain text, 1D & 2D codes)

They apply to all components used in Rolls-Royce engines.

ISO/IEC TR 29158 – Quality assessment for aeronautics & automotive

The ISO standard TR 29158 is relevant across industries – for component marking in aeronautics as well as for automotive and military applications.

It describes a quality assessment system for data matrix codes with five assessment levels:

  • Grade 0: Unreadable (Fail)
  • Grade 1–4: Minimum requirement to very high quality

Laser and needle-embossed markings are fully covered.

AIM-DPM – Direct Part Marking in aeronautics

The AIM-DPM standard expands on existing ISO specifications and defines additional requirements for direct part marking component marking in aeronautics, particularly with regard to:

  • Marking methods
  • Material properties
  • Durability and legibility

AIM-DPM ensures maximum process reliability, especially in aircraft construction.
